NMR Member Opens Fire on Police
A man in his 30s opened fire on police officers when they attempted to arrest him at his home in Östersund. He had been in a dispute with authorities over his firearm, which the police had confiscated due to his membership in the Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR). He is now detained on charges including attempted murder.
Police in Östersund were shot at on Wednesday evening while trying to arrest a man who had previously threatened them.
In his threats, the man described his intended actions, and since he is well-known to the police and previously had access to weapons, the threats were taken seriously, according to SVT Nyheter Jämtland.
During the arrest, the officers were fired upon.
In 2020, the police decided to confiscate the man's firearms, ammunition, and permits. The reason, according to the police, was the man's membership in the Nazi Nordic Resistance Movement, NMR.
Detained for Attempted Murder
The man attempted to appeal the decision, claiming he had only been a member of NMR until 2018. According to the Security Service, there was no indication in 2021 that his contacts with NMR had ceased.
The man was arrested on Wednesday evening, and his apartment is cordoned off and under surveillance, the police write on their website. The national bomb squad was on site to examine an object that later turned out to be harmless.
Neither the suspect nor any police officers were injured, and there was no danger to the public, the police report on their website.
On Friday, the man was detained on probable cause, suspected of attempted murder, serious weapons offenses, and serious threats against an official.
