New Rain Chaos Threatens Västernorrland: MSB Steps In

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a new rain warning for Västernorrland, with the potential for even greater devastation due to saturated ground. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is now involved.

"We must be truly prepared," says Mette Lindahl Olsson from the agency.

SMHI has issued a yellow warning for rain across large parts of Västernorrland County, effective Thursday and Friday morning.

The warning follows last weekend's downpour, which caused significant destruction in several municipalities and disrupted train services north of Sundsvall.

"Could Have Major Consequences"

The situation could worsen.

"The ground is saturated, so the incoming water has nowhere to go," says Mette Lindahl Olsson, head of MSB's unit for natural disaster and climate adaptation.

She continues:

"It could have quite significant consequences if it hits the same areas again. However, predicting downpours is challenging."

Potential outcomes include high water flows and further infrastructure damage.

MSB to Västernorrland

Mette Lindahl Olsson emphasizes the importance of readiness among municipal rescue services, technical departments, and those responsible for roads, typically the Swedish Transport Administration, municipalities, and community associations.

MSB has been called in to assist with the upcoming rainstorms.

"Reinforcement resources have been requested from us, which we will deploy. We have barriers, high-capacity pumps, and expertise in communication and management," says Mette Lindahl Olsson.

Norrland Coast Particularly Vulnerable

MSB generally works preventively, mapping risks along waterways, coasts, and large lakes.

Four years ago, the agency released a report identifying ten risk areas for landslides, erosion, and flooding, highlighting the central Norrland coast as particularly vulnerable. Last year, MSB identified 26 areas with significant flood risk, with Sundsvall being especially at risk.
