Four scooping aircraft and 16 personnel from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) participated in firefighting efforts in Bulgaria and Portugal for 29 days this summer—a record-breaking mission.
MSB has now summarized the Swedish contributions to the major wildfires on the continent.
"This is the longest and in many ways the most significant operation we have conducted since the major wildfires in 2018. Back then, Sweden received crucial help from Portugal—now we have had the opportunity to reciprocate that solidarity," comments Nils Vaernholt, Head of National Operations and Civil Protection at MSB, in a press release.
MSB's work began in Bulgaria on July 27 and continued in Portugal. The total number of operational hours amounted to 191.
