Around 4:30 PM on Friday, Ronya Sirén, 34, was at home in her apartment in Säter, napping with her eight-month-old baby, Dominic.
She was awakened by her friend calling repeatedly.
– I never answered because when I woke up, people were screaming outside the house. I took the baby and went out onto the balcony, and they shouted that I had to get out.
Fire and Smoke Everywhere
At first, she didn't understand what was happening, but when she opened the door, flames burst into the second-floor apartment.
– I ran back out and asked for help, but they screamed that I had to get out immediately.
On the apartment floor lay wet towels. Ronya wrapped them around herself and her son and ran out through the burning stairwell.
– I didn't have time to think at all. I just had to get my baby out.
Outside, they were examined by paramedics. They escaped without any physical injuries.
– We were very lucky, but it's mentally overwhelming. We've lost everything we own.
"Don't Know Where to Start"
Ronya moved into the house with her two sons in February.
– My 10-year-old son Damien wasn't home. He's understandably upset about his belongings, which are invaluable to him. But he's mostly grateful that we're okay.
What happens next for the family is uncertain.
– Thoughts are swirling, we don't even know where we'll live. You don't know where to start.
At the same time, Ronya says she feels overwhelmed with gratitude for the people around her.
– We've received support from such unexpected places. People I don't even know want to help.
Police Investigation
The multi-family building contains four apartments.
Police report that one person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
– The fire is currently being investigated as public negligence, says Hans-Jögen Ostler of the police.
