Minister's Family Ties to Extremism Unveiled: A Call for Transparency
A minister has a close relative with far-right extremist connections, according to Expo—something Säpo was unaware of. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) declined to comment on the information.
A close relative of a government minister has been actively involved in the Swedish far-right for about a year, reports the anti-racist magazine Expo.
This involvement includes participating in activities with the Nazi group Aktivklubb Sverige, associating with a member of the Nordic Resistance Movement, engaging with the far-right group Det fria Sverige, and putting up extremist stickers labeled "white zone."
According to Expo, Säpo was not aware of the individual.
– If the Security Service does not have this information, it is quite astonishing. It is serious, says security expert Kim Hakkarainen to Expo.
Political Leaders Demand Accountability
Member of Parliament Morgan Johansson (S) comments on the incident on X, stating that the minister should have informed about the relative's activities.
"As a minister, you are not responsible for your relatives' choices. But you are responsible for informing Säpo about close ties to violent extremism. The minister in question cannot hide but must answer whether this was done," writes Morgan Johansson.
He also points out that violent right-wing extremism consists of "very dangerous groups and individuals who have committed numerous serious violent crimes, in Sweden and worldwide."
Government's Silence
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) tells Aftonbladet that he does not want to comment further on the information.
– It is not a public person. That means I have no further opinion or intention to comment further, says Gunnar Strömmer to the newspaper.
Gunnar Strömmer states that the minister and their employer received the information from the Security Service.
Expressen has contacted the concerned minister, who has not responded. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also refrains from commenting, referring to the government office. His press secretary does not answer why they do not want to comment.
Neither does the government's security chief Emma Degerfeldt want to answer questions.
"We have no comments and refer all questions to our press service," writes the security department in a text message.
