Minister Denounces All Forms of Political Extremism Amid Family Controversy
A close relative of a Swedish minister has been involved with far-right extremism, as revealed by Expo. The minister has now commented on the situation, stating they were informed last week.
“I abhor all forms of political extremism,” the minister said in a statement to TT.
The minister's relative participated in several activities with the neo-Nazi group Aktivklubb Sverige, associated with a member of the Nordic Resistance Movement, and put up far-right stickers, including one labeled “white zone,” according to Expo.
The latest contact reported by Expo was with Aktivklubb Sverige.
Since the revelation, the government has been reticent about the incident.
However, a source close to the government told Expressen that “all security protocols were followed” when the minister was informed. The source could not specify when the minister received the information.
“Had Long and Sincere Conversations”
The minister now states in a first comment to TT that they received the information only last week, days before Expo's publication. It is unclear if the information came due to Expo's inquiries or another source.
“Last week, I learned that a close relative in their early teens had been associating with entirely the wrong circles. I abhor all forms of political extremism and strongly distance myself from it,” the minister told TT through the deputy press secretary to the Prime Minister, Hanna Strömberg.
Terrorism researcher Magnus Ranstorp previously told Expressen that the core issue is when the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) learned of the information and whether it was communicated to the government's security department.
Expressen has sought Gunnar Strömmer, who represents the government. He stated through his press secretary that he would not disclose “the exact timing” of when the information was received.
“I have had long and sincere conversations with the minor, who is both remorseful and upset. All associations with these circles are a closed chapter,” the minister continued in the comment to TT.
The minister also stated that they acted according to security protocols.
“Since I became aware of this, I have immediately acted according to the applicable security protocols. I have had close cooperation with the Security Police,” the minister told TT.
Expressen is seeking the minister.
