A remarkable discovery of a medieval silver treasure has been made in the Stockholm area. Initially searching for fishing worms, the finder stumbled upon a trove of coins, pearls, rings, and pendants dating back to the 1100s. Massive Medieval Silver Treasure Unearthed in Stockholm
A remarkable discovery of a medieval silver treasure has been made in the Stockholm area. The finder, who was initially searching for fishing worms, may now be in for a significant reward.
The silver hoard consists of coins, pearls, rings, and pendants, primarily dating back to the 1100s, according to the county administrative board.
The finder was digging for fishing worms near their summer house when they made the astonishing six-kilogram discovery.
"This is likely one of the largest silver treasures from the early Middle Ages found in Sweden," says Sofia Andersson, an antiquarian at the county administrative board, in a press release.
The county administrative board estimates the treasure includes up to 20,000 coins, many of which are both rare and well-preserved.
Archaeologists will now work to examine and document the find.
For the finder, a more modern treasure—in the form of money—may await.
"The finder acted entirely correctly by contacting us at the county administrative board. According to the Cultural Heritage Act, anyone who finds a silver artifact or a hoard is obliged to offer the state the opportunity to purchase it," says Sofia Andersson.
