Thousands of employees in Stockholm City have had their personal information exposed following a major data breach at the system provider Miljödata.

"The attacker has accessed personal data of all employees in Stockholm City," states a letter sent to the employees, according to the newspaper.

The data includes personal identification numbers, phone numbers, addresses, and employment IDs. Individuals with protected information were not in Miljödata's system and have not been exposed.

"Possible consequences of the incident include losing control over your personal data and the data being used fraudulently," the letter warns.

Stockholm City employs over 40,000 people across more than 300 different professions.

Last Friday, Gothenburg City was also informed that personal data of employees in "all administrations and several companies" had been leaked. A total of 165,000 current and former employees are affected.

"There are 165,000 people whose data the provider can see has been compiled in the system. There is no evidence of extraction, but since an external actor had access, it is considered unauthorized exposure," says Kristina Högström, head of shared services at Intraservice in Gothenburg City, to TT.

Most of those affected are former employees. The entire city is not impacted, but rather the administrations and companies, according to Kristina Högström.

On August 23, parts of Miljödata's IT environment were subjected to a cyberattack. 80% of Sweden's municipalities use the provider, and the system handles labor law cases, rehabilitation cases, and management of work injuries and incidents.

Miljödata has reportedly been subjected to extortion in connection with the IT attack.
