Man Sentenced to Six Years for Rape at Elderly Care Home

A man in his 40s raped an elderly woman at a care home. He has now been sentenced to six years in prison.

“He exploited the victim's completely defenseless and severely vulnerable situation,” the verdict states.

The man worked as a caregiver at the care home in Värmland and was alone on the ward where the woman lived during a night in February.

She is between 80 and 90 years old, and her health condition requires her to receive “help with virtually everything in daily life,” according to the verdict.

During the night, the man handled several alarms in the woman's room, and the next morning she told staff and relatives that he had raped her. Technical evidence also revealed that the man's DNA was found on the woman's mattress cover.

He has now been sentenced by the Värmland District Court to six years in prison for aggravated rape, as it was deemed to have been committed with “particular ruthlessness.” He is also ordered to pay damages of 320,000 kronor.

Relieved Relatives

The verdict confirms the man's guilt and that he exploited his position as staff at the care home.

“Which made it possible for him to commit the act in a place where the victim should be able to feel safe,” the verdict states.

The woman's legal representative, Sara Ronéus, says the woman's relatives welcome the verdict.

“They are relieved and grateful that he received the sentence the prosecutor demanded,” she says.

The man has denied the crime.
