A significant fire broke out early this morning in a multi-family building in Borlänge, leading to the evacuation of 40 residents. The fire, which started in a top-floor apartment, spread to the roof structure. Although no injuries have been reported, thick black smoke continues to rise, prompting a temporary public warning. Shortly before 6 AM this morning, an alarm was raised about a fully developed fire in a multi-family building at Tjärna Ängar. As of Wednesday morning, the fire department is still working to extinguish the blaze, while thick black smoke billows over the city.
According to the fire department, the fire started in an apartment on the top floor and then spread to the roof structure.
Forty residents have been evacuated, according to P4 Dalarna. They have been taken to a local facility in the area and are being cared for by police and medical services. No injuries have been reported.
As of 10 AM, the fire is still burning, and thick, black smoke is rising from the roof. A public warning was issued for residents in Tjärna Ängar, advising them to stay indoors and close doors and windows. This warning was lifted around 10:45 AM when the fire was reported to be partially under control.
The fire department hopes to save the building.
"The goal is to save the building, but we do not know the extent of the damage at this time," said Emil Berggren at 7 AM on Thursday.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but initial reports from the fire department suggest it is not arson. The police are investigating gross public negligence but have no suspects.
