Major Fire at Scrap Yard in Gothenburg: Public Warning Issued
A fire has been raging at a scrap facility in Gothenburg throughout the night, blanketing the city in a thick fog.
"It's a mix of various debris piled high," says Micael Olsson from the rescue services. A public warning has been issued.
The fire at a recycling center in Angered, northeastern Gothenburg, broke out around 7:30 PM on Monday.
The rescue services anticipate that extinguishing the fire will take time.
"The presence of metal makes it difficult to put out. It's a mix of various debris piled high. It's impossible to access or separate it with machinery because it's so compact," says Micael Olsson, alarm and operations operator at the rescue services.
The heavy smoke has spread to large parts of Gothenburg.
"The smoke stings the nose," says Micael Olsson.
Early Tuesday morning, the rescue services issued a public warning to Gothenburg residents, advising those in the area to stay indoors and close doors and windows due to the smoke.
"The whole city can't avoid going to work, but if you can stay inside, you should," says Micael Olsson.
