Abier, a 27-year-old woman, was murdered by her husband Mohammed Osman after attempting to divorce him. The court sentenced Osman and his mother to life imprisonment for the honor killing, while other family members received various prison terms for their involvement.

Abier, 27, loved life and making others happy. To live freely, she tried to divorce her husband Mohammed Osman, 37, but he strangled her to death. Now, her husband, his mother Saila Bakar, and brother Khalil Osman have been sentenced to prison for the honor killing.
On September 17 last year, 27-year-old Abier was found dead in her apartment in Eskilstuna. She had not shown up for work, raising suspicions among colleagues who reported her missing.
It was revealed that the young woman had been murdered. According to the district court, part of the motive was her husband and his family's desire to "restore the family's honor."
Abier Wanted a Divorce
For years, Abier tried to divorce her husband Mohammed Osman. She had been trapped in a marriage with him since the age of 17, but after moving to Sweden from Syria in 2016, she began dressing more Western and dreaming of a life of freedom.
– She asked for a divorce several times to live her life in peace and with dignity like other women, but this request was a sign to the family that she had decided to go to her grave, Abier's sister previously said.
Threatened by Mohammed Osman's Family
After Abier wanted to report her husband for abuse in 2022, he took the children and disappeared to Turkey, then to Greece.
There, he and his family continued to control Abier in Sweden, including with death threats.
– My sister was very scared and insecure because of the threats she received from her husband and his family. They tried several times to kill and strangle her, and they threatened her with her children as they were her weak point, the sister recounted.
“Loved to Have Fun”
She describes Abier as a person who loved life and making others happy.
– My sister was a very kind and happy person who loved to have fun, play, dance, and sing. Wherever she went, she spread joy and happiness around her.
– She wanted a divorce, but her husband and his family could not accept it.
Several Family Members Sentenced
On Tuesday, Mohammed Osman was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife. His mother Saila Bakar, 55, was also sentenced to life imprisonment for incitement to murder and conspiracy to murder, and his brother Khalil Osman, 26, was sentenced to twelve years in prison for aiding and abetting murder and gross protection of a criminal.
In addition, Osman's sister and her husband were sentenced to two years and two years and six months in prison, respectively, for gross protection of a criminal.
Two more people, a mother and daughter, were sentenced to one year and six months in prison for gross protection of a criminal.
