Lena Olin Faces Eviction Amid Apartment Misery in Stockholm
Lena Olin has been accused of illegal subletting and neglect in her Stockholm rental apartment. The housing tribunal has now made a decision: the Hollywood star is to be evicted.
Since 1979, actress Lena Olin, 70, has rented an apartment in Gärdet, central Stockholm.
In spring 2024, a severe water damage was discovered when water started dripping from the ceiling of the downstairs neighbor, leaving the apartment in disrepair. The repair bill: half a million.
Afterwards, the landlord sought to evict Lena Olin, arguing:
- She failed to maintain the apartment and did not inform the landlord about the water damage.
- She allegedly sublet the apartment illegally.
- She does not need the apartment as she resides in the USA and owns several other properties in Sweden, including a condo in Stockholm with her husband, director Lasse Hallström, 79.
However, Lena Olin did not concede. Instead, she took the matter to the housing tribunal.
She claims she intends to live in the apartment and could not reasonably have discovered the water damage.
After several exchanges of documents and a meeting in May, the housing tribunal has now made its decision.
And it is to evict Lena Olin.
By September 30 this year, she must vacate the premises – with the water damage being the pivotal issue.
Housing Tribunal: “So Serious”
The housing tribunal writes:
“Given the time the apartment was left unattended or the lack of notification to the landlord once discovery was possible, Lena Olin has seriously neglected her obligations as a tenant. Even though it concerns a long rental period, her neglect is so serious that the agreement should reasonably not be extended on this basis.”
Lena Olin – who is also involved in a contentious inheritance dispute over a house in the exclusive Skanör-Falsterbo – has the option to appeal the decision to the Svea Court of Appeal.
Expressen has sought comments from Lena Olin's representative Jens Göthberg and the landlord's representative Max Goldman.
