Island Ablaze in Östergötland Archipelago: Firefighters Encircle the Flames

An island is engulfed in flames in the Östergötland archipelago on Saturday evening. The rescue services and coast guard are attempting to extinguish the fire over an area of 3,000 square meters.

"We have encircled the fire," says Pia Nautras, alarm and operations officer at the Rescue Service.

At 6:15 PM on Saturday evening, the Rescue Service received an alert about a fire on Viholmen Island in the Sankt Anna archipelago in Östergötland. A 3,000 square meter area was ablaze.

"We have encircled the fire. There are no houses on the island, which facilitates the firefighting efforts, and the sea acts as a natural barrier. However, the terrain is challenging," says Pia Nautras, alarm and operations officer at the Rescue Service Östra Götaland.

"We expect to work on extinguishing the fire throughout the evening until it gets dark. It is possible that follow-up extinguishing and checks will also be required on Sunday," she says.

The firefighting is a collaborative effort between the Rescue Service Östra Götaland, municipal rescue services, the coast guard, and the Sea Rescue Society.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
