Inmates Strike Over Food Shortage at Vänersborg Prison
Inmates at Brinkeberg prison in Vänersborg are protesting due to insufficient food supplies. Now, prisoners in two of the four units have gone on strike, reports Kriminalvårdsmagasinet.
"I understand the clients' frustration," says an employee at the prison.
The strike began on Friday and continues into Monday, according to Kriminalvårdsmagasinet.
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service confirms to the magazine that inmates at Brinkeberg prison have gone on strike because they are not receiving enough food.
However, the prison's head of corrections, Henrik Vang, tells the magazine that the issue could have been avoided if the inmates had changed their behavior.
"In the two striking units, the food would have been sufficient if it had been distributed fairly. This has not happened, and we will therefore continue to portion out lunch and dinner to each inmate."
According to Henrik Vang, the inmates receive adequate portions in line with the recommendations of the National Food Agency, writes Kriminalvårdsmagasinet.
"I Understand the Clients' Frustration"
An employee at Brinkeberg prison, however, sides with the striking inmates.
"Unfortunately, I have seen myself that it is not enough to portion out the food. The amount of food distributed to the clients is, in my opinion, very little for an adult man. Several of my colleagues agree. I know colleagues who work at Högsbo, and they do not have this problem at all, so I think it should be solvable. I understand the clients' frustration," the employee tells Kriminalvårdsmagasinet.
