More first-time voters and elderly citizens are expected to participate in next year's elections, according to preliminary figures from Statistics Sweden (SCB).
A total of 7.8 million Swedish citizens residing in Sweden are projected to be eligible to vote in all elections in 2026, which is 190,000 more than in the last election year, 2022.
The proportion of eligible voters aged 65 and older continues to rise, expected to make up 29 percent. The majority of this group are women, with the highest concentrations of elderly voters in the municipalities of Borgholm and Övertorneå.
Among first-time voters aged 18-21, over half are men. The largest numbers of first-time voters are found in municipalities around the major cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö.
Next year's elections for the national parliament, regional, and municipal councils will be held on Sunday, September 13. In the municipal and regional council elections, foreign citizens are also allowed to vote, with the number of eligible voters in this group estimated at just over 590,000 people.
