Improved Train Punctuality in Sweden This Summer
During June, July, and August, 88.5% of passenger trains arrived on time, showing a slight improvement compared to the past two summers, according to statistics from Trafikverket.
A total of a quarter of a million passenger trains operated on the country's railways during the summer months. Of these, 96% arrived within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. Overall, punctuality improved by 1 percentage point compared to summer 2022, and 2 percentage points compared to 2023, according to Trafikverket.
All trains that are more than five minutes late to their final destination are considered delayed. The delays are attributed to infrastructure issues, such as switches or overhead lines, train faults, and external causes like weather or unauthorized track access. Nearly 3,000 trains were affected by track trespassing during the summer.
Two major disruptions occurred following a thunderstorm and an electrical fault in Linköping and Bastuträsk, respectively. Trafikverket is investigating these incidents.
The lines with the highest punctuality included Gothenburg–Copenhagen (long-distance trains), Åstorp–Helsingborg (commuter trains), Nässjö–Vetlanda (regional trains), and Helsingborg–Halmstad.
