Homeless Cats from Skåne Find New Homes in Stockholm
Skåne is overwhelmed with homeless cats. Now, these animals are being sent to shelters in Stockholm.
"The situation is catastrophic," says Katarina Breiner, chairperson of the Homeless Cats shelter.
Mild winters and many farms are reasons for the growing cat population in Skåne, reports Sydsvenskan. According to Katarina Breiner, chairperson of the Homeless Cats shelter in Helsingborg/Skåne, there are approximately 25,000 homeless cats in the region.
Shelters in Skåne cannot accommodate all the cats, and the demand for adoptions is insufficient. Therefore, the cats from Skåne are now being sent to Stockholm.
"There is No Space"
"The situation is catastrophic. There is no space, and the demand does not meet the large number of cats in Skåne. If we adopt out a cat for 1,500 kronor, in Stockholm, they can charge 2,500 kronor and still find homes for all the cats. The demand is greater there, and there are fewer homeless cats," she tells Sydsvenskan.
Some of the homeless cats end up at Kattstallet, a cat rescue in Stockholm. Operations manager Careen True tells Sydsvenskan that their twelve quarantine rooms are full of cats that have come from Skåne.
"Stockholm's cat rescues are filling up with homeless cats from Skåne," she says.
