Highly Toxic Jellyfish Discovered in Öresund

A life-threatening jellyfish has appeared in Öresund, prompting experts to issue a strong warning.

"It is small, mysterious, and incredibly toxic. You should absolutely not touch it," says Jens Peder Jeppesen, aquarium manager at Öresund Aquarium, to Danish TV2.

The small but extremely toxic jellyfish has been caught in Danish waters for the first time, reports TV2.

The venom can cause severe pain, muscle cramps, breathing difficulties, and swelling. The jellyfish is believed to have arrived in Öresund with ballast water from a ship from the Pacific Ocean.

"It does not belong here and can cause problems," says Jeppesen.

The jellyfish has also been seen off the Norwegian coast and was previously found in Swedish waters, including around Tjörn in the summer of 2018, according to the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management.
