Henrik Jönsson on the murder of Charlie Kirk: “A strong voice has been silenced in a terrible way”
The American conservative figure Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot dead on stage during a debate in Utah.
YouTube personality and debater Henrik Jönsson had previously met Charlie Kirk at the Conservative Political Action Conference in the USA, an annual event for conservative activists and leaders.
– I met him there along with some other American Republicans, says Henrik Jönsson.
He describes Charlie Kirk as a skilled debater.
– He is much more conservative than I am, so we are not necessarily like-minded, but I am inspired by his straightforward manner and competent argumentative style, in presenting the things he genuinely believes in with great clarity and effective communication.
“Absolutely Terrible”
The murder has deeply shaken Henrik Jönsson.
– It is absolutely terrible. Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, people must be allowed to stand up and express their opinions within the law without being subjected to any form of threat. Otherwise, the entire free debate and the foundation of democracy collapse.
He emphasizes the importance of being able to express opinions without risking violence.
– I understand, of course, that there are many people who did not like Charlie Kirk. Because he had very firm opinions on things like abortion, family, and the church that many people do not like. But that is not a reason to resort to violence. It is absolutely terrible.
Henrik Jönsson will miss Kirk's presence in the debate.
– I will miss not seeing the video clips that he and his team regularly publish when he is out debating on various college campuses.
Ebba Busch: Hardly Words
Even KD leader Ebba Busch highlights Kirk's willingness to engage in dialogue with his opponents. She claims that the murder is “celebrated” in leftist circles in the USA – but also in Sweden.
“How is it possible to rejoice over an opponent's death? Without conversation and the ability to meet opposition with sharpness, objectivity, and respect, the civilized society will be lost,” she writes.
