Sweden braces for a wet spell as a low-pressure system from the west collides with a Polish '5-b cyclone', bringing significant rainfall across the country. SMHI has issued warnings for heavy rain, particularly affecting Västernorrland, which is already saturated from previous downpours. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, marking the end of summer.

Heavy Rainfall to Drench Sweden: A Wet and Chilly Week Ahead
Get your umbrellas ready—rain is on the way. A low-pressure system from the west is expected to collide with a Polish '5-b cyclone'.
- "It's going to be a wet period now," says meteorologist Martin Kjell.
- SMHI has issued a warning for heavy rain.
Goodbye, summer.
Halfway through September, it seems summer is finally releasing its grip on Sweden. The entire country is set to experience wetter and colder conditions.
On Sunday, a low-pressure system will move in from the west, bringing rain to the entire southwestern half of Sweden by evening. Over Gotland, this system will collide with another low-pressure system, known as a '5-b cyclone', prompting SMHI to issue a yellow warning for heavy rain on Sunday evening. Although the warning was later retracted, significant rainfall is still expected.
- "Up to 40 to 50 millimeters of rain could fall there, which is quite a lot," says Martin Kjell, meteorologist at Stormgeo.
The 5-b cyclone originates from Poland and brings wet weather. It should not be confused with a tropical cyclone but is rather a meteorological term for a low-pressure system moving north over the Baltic Sea.
Yellow Warning for Affected Västernorrland
The rain is expected to persist and move quickly.
A yellow warning has been issued for Västernorrland County, which was severely affected by heavy rain just a week ago.
The warning is in effect from midnight on Sunday until 4 PM on Monday.
- "The ground is already saturated there, and about 30 millimeters more could fall on Monday, so I would warn the Norrland coast the most," says Martin Kjell.
"Significantly Cooler"
But it's not just Gotland and Västernorrland that will see rain.
According to Martin Kjell, we can expect unstable weather and a wet start to the week across large parts of Sweden, combined with significantly cooler temperatures.
- "It will be significantly cooler now, with temperatures not exceeding 15-16 degrees in the south and 10-12 in the north. It's also a very wet period with a lot of rain until Wednesday," he says.
