Heatwave Alert: Sweden Braces for Record Temperatures
The summer heat is arriving just in time for July. In some areas, temperatures could reach up to 30 degrees Celsius, posing risks for certain groups, according to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI).
SMHI's warning of high temperatures applies from Monday to Thursday in southeastern Götaland, where temperatures will range between 25 and 30 degrees, and on Wednesday, it is likely to exceed 30 degrees.
This increase in temperature poses a heightened risk of health problems, SMHI warns. Certain groups are particularly vulnerable, including the elderly, the sick, and young children.
"Be attentive to whether people around you are affected by the heat," SMHI advises in their message.
At the same time, the risk of forest fires is very high in large parts of southern Sweden. In Stockholm and southeastern Götaland, the fire risk is extremely high.
Potential Record-Breaking Heat
It will be warm across most of the country on Tuesday. After that, cooler air will start moving in, but in one corner of the country, the high temperatures will persist through Wednesday, which could become the hottest day of the year.
"It will definitely rise above 30 degrees in southeastern Götaland, possibly reaching 32 degrees," says Johan Groth, meteorologist at Stormgeo.
So far, this year's heat record stands at 29.9 degrees in Målilla on June 15, but if the forecast holds, it will be surpassed.
"Enjoy"
By Thursday, all the warm air will move eastward, ending the heatwave for now.
"On Thursday, it could be 10 degrees cooler in eastern Götaland, and the upcoming weekend looks mediocre, with classic Swedish summer weather returning," says Groth.
This simply means one thing:
"Enjoy the warmth, because it will soon be over."
