Health Alert: Serious Issues Found at Liseberg's Breakfast Buffet
Gothenburg's municipality has issued sharp criticism against Liseberg's holiday village, Lisebergsbyn. The Environmental Department has identified health risks at the amusement park's breakfast buffet and demands immediate action. "The deviations are serious," the authority states in its decision.
Last week, the Environmental Department conducted an inspection at Lisebergsbyn. Following the inspection, discoveries were made that prompted the authority to alarm about "serious deviations" at the accommodation's breakfast buffet.
Municipal inspectors report that Liseberg "does not handle food safety properly."
Could Lead to Norovirus and Diarrhea
In a decision, they note that diners risk getting sick from the berries served, as Lisebergsbyn's staff do not ensure they are safe to eat.
The buffet includes strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries.
The Environmental Department focuses on the fact that the berries are stored frozen and not cooked before being placed on the buffet. They point out that there is a risk that frozen berries not heated can contain norovirus and hepatitis A, which can lead to severe illness.
Those who contract norovirus may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, according to 1177.
"These viruses are dangerous even in small amounts, so it is important that you can guarantee that the berries you use do not make your guests sick," the Environmental Department writes in its decision.
Must Act Quickly
Gothenburg's municipality demands that Liseberg implement swift measures and "ensure that the berries you use are safe for your guests to eat."
Since they assess the deviations at Liseberg as serious, the decision applies "immediately," regardless of whether the amusement park appeals or not.
Liseberg's Response
Clara Rosendahl, who is the communications manager at Liseberg, states that they had smoothie berries on the buffet that, according to the supplier's instructions, did not need to be pre-cooked. However, the Environmental Department disagreed with this view.
– It was then decided on-site that the berries will henceforth be cooked, says Clara Rosendahl.
The remaining berries were cooked and used as berry compote for the yogurt on the buffet. According to Clara Rosendahl, the matter was concluded on June 26.
– Now we have switched to Swedish strawberries, she says.
