Greta Thunberg Faces Terrorism Charges Amid Gaza Flotilla Protest

A global fleet of activists from 44 countries is heading towards Gaza. On one of the boats is Greta Thunberg, who was previously stopped during a similar action. Now, she risks being detained as a terrorist, according to sources from the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom.

On Sunday, several ships loaded with humanitarian aid left the port of Barcelona. More than 50 boats are participating in the action organized by the Global Sumud Flotilla network, reports Al Jazeera.

Among the activists is Greta Thunberg, who was stopped this summer when she participated in a similar initiative. The sailboat Madleen was then boarded by Israeli forces in international waters.

However, this time, Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has a significantly tougher plan.

“They Will Regret Coming Here”

On Sunday, a meeting will be held at the Prime Minister's residence regarding Israel's strategy against the activists. Ben-Gvir is expected to propose to Netanyahu that the activists be arrested and placed in terrorism units at the Ktzi'ot and Damon prisons, according to reports from the government-friendly newspaper Israel Hayom.

The facilities lack TV, radio, or high-quality food, and they are to be held there not just overnight but for an extended period.

– After several weeks at Ktzi'ot and Damon, they will regret coming here. We must deter their willingness to make new attempts, a source told the newspaper.

Political Maverick Joins the Action

Detentions are to be based on the activists' unauthorized entry into a prohibited military area.

On Thursday, the flotilla will join boats sailing from Tunisia and Sicily, then head towards Gaza. Former V-member and now political maverick Lorena Delgado Varas is also participating in the action.

– The idea is to gather as many boats as possible to enter Gaza via the Mediterranean with humanitarian aid, thereby opening up a humanitarian corridor, she said in an interview with Expressen earlier this week.
