Free Driver's License for Students: A New Incentive in Stockholm

Kungsholmens Västra Gymnasium and Stockholm's Transport and Vehicle Technical High School are offering students a scholarship for a driver's license, but there are two conditions.

Study hard and get a free B-class driver's license?

For high school students in Stockholm, this could soon become a reality as the municipality introduces a new driver's license scholarship, reports Mitt i.

Students in selected healthcare and vehicle and transport programs have the opportunity to receive 15,000 SEK to obtain a driver's license.

The reasons are several:

Partly to attract more students to professions where a driver's license is essential, and partly to facilitate students' entry into the workforce when the time comes.

The Cost of the Initiative

Initially, the initiative applies to Kungsholmens Västra Gymnasium and Stockholm's Transport and Vehicle Technical High School.

"Many jobs require a driver's license just to get an interview. Secondly, we want to enhance the attractiveness of vocational programs. We already see increased interest, but we are convinced that this incentive can attract even more applicants," says School Commissioner Emilia Bjuggren (S) to Mitt i.

The new benefit is estimated to cost Stockholm approximately 1.3 million SEK per year, but if interest is high and more students apply to the programs, the amount could rise to around 1.8 million, writes the newspaper.

Requirements for Approval

The new driver's license scholarship is available to students starting high school this year and is awarded continuously from the second year onwards.

The amount of 15,000 SEK can cover all parts of the driver's license education, but there are two requirements that must be met to utilize the benefit:

A student must have at least a grade E in all completed courses after the first year and not have too many absentee hours. What constitutes good attendance is determined by the principal at each school, writes the City of Stockholm on its website.
