Four Swedes Hospitalized After Catamaran Capsizes in Croatia

Four Swedes have been taken to the hospital after a catamaran capsized in Croatia on Monday, according to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A sudden storm overturned the boat, throwing nine people, including seven Swedes, into the sea. A nearby sailboat rescued the passengers.

Seven Swedish tourists were thrown into the sea when a catamaran capsized off the island of Kaprije in Croatia, reports Croatian media. A German and a Croatian citizen also ended up in the water.

The Croatian weather service has issued severe weather warnings following the accident. An upcoming thunderstorm could be followed by storms and hurricane-force winds on Monday, according to the warning.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Four Swedes Hospitalized

Several foreign nationals were taken to a hospital in the tourist town of Sibenik nearby. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of the accident.

"Seven Swedish citizens were on the boat, four of whom have been taken to the hospital in Sibenik for follow-up. The embassy is in contact with the local hospital," writes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' press service to Expressen.

Sudden Storm

A sudden storm in generally unstable weather caused the boat to capsize. The maritime police station in Sibenik received an alert about a maritime accident at 11:35 on Monday.

A police boat quickly arrived at the scene and was able to bring all nine ashore, Croatian media reports. People on a nearby sailboat also helped rescue those who ended up in the water.

The accident occurred near the historic city of Sibenik, which is the oldest city on the Croatian coast. It is a popular tourist destination, as is the entire archipelago in the surroundings.
