Flood Chaos in Jönköping: Heavy Rain Triggers Multiple Alerts

A yellow warning for rain has been issued for large parts of Sweden on Friday. One area affected by the downpour is Jönköping, where several flood alerts have been reported in the afternoon, according to JP.

Just before 2 PM, the first flood alert in Jönköping was received. Since then, reports of overflowing drains and water damage to houses have continued to come in.

Between 2 PM and 3 PM on Friday, emergency services were alerted approximately every three minutes, writes JP. Most of the alerts are related to the rainstorm.

The heavy rain has also caused traffic issues. Jönköping County's traffic authority has closed a bus stop due to the water masses. Long queues are also troubling afternoon commuters in the city, including on Highway 40 where a car hydroplaned, causing traffic disruptions.

– A car skidded off the road due to hydroplaning and ended up in a ditch. No one was injured, says the emergency services' operations manager.

Reinforcements

The county's emergency services are reinforcing with teams from other areas, reports P4 Jönköping.

– We are now allocating resources to all these incidents and, of course, prioritizing critical societal functions first, says Fredrik Björnberg, the on-duty rescue chief, to the channel.

Yellow rain warnings have been issued for parts of central and western Sweden. SMHI warns that 30 to 40 millimeters of rain could fall in a short time, which could lead to flooding.
