Fire Erupts at Construction Site in Central Gothenburg

Thick black smoke rose over Gothenburg after a fire broke out at a construction site near Götaplatsen on Thursday morning. The fire started following a controlled explosion at the site. By 09:30, the fire was extinguished.

The alarm was raised at 08:21. Many callers reported seeing heavy smoke in central Gothenburg after the construction site near Götaplatsen caught fire.

The fire originated in a so-called blast mat.

– "It's a large rubber mat placed over blast sites to prevent debris and other hazards," said Joakim Hallin, the rescue service's operations manager.

No injuries were reported, but the site was evacuated. Around 09:20, the rescue service announced that the fire was out, but smoke continued to spread from the site.

“There is still heavy smoke in a larger area around the site, with the smoke moving down Avenyn. If you feel discomfort, it is recommended to close windows, vents, and stay indoors. The current forecast is approximately 45 minutes,” stated a press release.

There is no danger to the public.

According to GP, the construction involves the new art project.
