Shortly after midnight, police were alerted to a shooting in Barkarby, north of Stockholm. A 21-year-old man was shot dead.
– I can confirm that now, said duty officer Jens Mårtensson, shortly after 5 AM.
The shooting occurred behind the outlet area in Barkarby, very close to Ikea, according to police officer Niklas Berglund.
The man was taken to the hospital, but it is unclear if he died on the scene or at the hospital. However, police report that the death occurred shortly after the crime.
– It was quite close to the actual crime, said Jens Mårtensson.
The man is reportedly somewhat known to the police from previous encounters.
No Arrests Made
No one has been arrested at this time, and a large search operation took place overnight.
– We are on site with significant resources to find potential perpetrators, secure the crime scene, and gather information, said police spokesperson Carina Skagerlind shortly after midnight.
Both dog patrols and helicopters were used in the operation. Several people and vehicles have been checked in the area, and the crime scene has been cordoned off for a forensic investigation.
Police have also reviewed cameras in the area to obtain images of individuals who may have been in the vicinity.
By 7 AM, police stated that the on-site operation was concluded.
– We have completed the operational part, and the cordon has been lifted. No police resources remain at the scene, said Niklas Berglund.
The police are still searching for the perpetrator.
– It is currently unknown if there is one or more perpetrators, said Niklas Berglund.
The victim's relatives have been notified.
