Edward Blom Criticizes SSU's Campaign: 'Arrogance'

SSU claims Jesus was a socialist, sparking Edward Blom's anger. – It's arrogance to believe that God himself supports one's own small party, he says.

Ahead of the church election on September 21, the Social Democratic Youth League, SSU, launched the campaign 'Jesus was a socialist.'

SSU argues that Jesus healing the sick, driving out merchants from the temple in Jerusalem, and sharing food with the needy are signs that his sympathies would lean left if he lived today.

'If God Exists, He is Greater than SSU'

The message has angered TV personality Edward Blom, who considers it blasphemy against the Lord.

– It's arrogance to believe that God himself supports one's own small party. If God exists, he is likely much greater than SSU, he says.

According to Blom, it's 'incredibly dirty' to politicize religion, and he would prefer the church election to be abolished.

– I'm Catholic, so the Church of Sweden is not my church. But I think they should be ashamed for not getting rid of political parties in the church, he says and continues:

– Only non-believers think it's good, so they get another political arena for their party politics. The church can take a stand on religious issues, but of course, it should be apolitical.

Wants SSU to Pray for Their Representatives

If the election is to be held, Blom wants SSU to change its strategy.

– They could start by praying to bring forth the best representatives in the church council, he says.

SSU's Secretary General Lotta Wiechel sees no problem with the campaign and simultaneously criticizes her political opponents.

'Jesus would not have voted for the Tidö government, and certainly not for the Christian Democrats. It is not consistent with Christian values to cut aid when the world is on fire and needs are greatest,' she writes in a comment to Expressen.
