Doctor Sentenced After Patient Dies Post-Surgery in Malmö
A 49-year-old woman died during a stomach operation at a private clinic in Malmö. The doctor who administered anesthesia was sentenced on Tuesday for gross negligence leading to another's death. He received a two-year prison sentence.
In March 2023, the 49-year-old underwent abdominal surgery at the private cosmetic clinic in Malmö. She never woke up from the anesthesia.
In November of the same year, the clinic received a red light from Ivo, the Health and Social Care Inspectorate. It was banned from providing healthcare, aesthetic surgery, and performing aesthetic injection treatments because the clinic was deemed unsafe in its anesthesia and pain management practices.
The 64-year-old doctor who anesthetized the woman was charged in March 2025. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday.
Multiple Negligences
He was sentenced to two years in prison for causing another's death and was found guilty of several serious negligences.
"He unnecessarily and incorrectly administered a dangerous muscle relaxant, prescribed insulin in a faulty and dangerous manner, and failed in various ways to monitor the woman," Malmö District Court stated in a press release.
He was a licensed doctor but did not have Swedish-approved specialization in anesthesia. Yet, he anesthetized his patients.
"According to the district court, NN must have realized that he should not have taken on the responsibility he did, and his own statements revealed that he took conscious risks in care," the court wrote in the verdict.
Revoked Medical License
– The defendant's inadequate record-keeping has made it more difficult to assess how the care was performed and whether it contributed to the woman's death. However, the investigation is sufficient to meet the high standard of proof required in criminal cases, said Judge Joakim Svensson in a statement.
The doctor must also pay approximately 460,000 kronor in damages to the woman's husband and adult children.
In the spring of 2025, he lost his medical license, as reported by Sydsvenskan at the time.
The doctor has denied any wrongdoing.
