Diplomat Refuses Security Check

A foreign diplomat refused to undergo a security check at Arlanda Airport.

The incident occurred nearly two weeks ago when police were called to Terminal 2 at Arlanda as a foreign diplomat was about to fly from there.

When the diplomat passed through a security arch, it signaled for a random security check. However, the diplomat "refused to submit to a security check," according to a police memo obtained by the news agency Siren.

Diplomat's Explanation

The diplomat claimed that it was not the security arch that signaled but rather the airport security officer who selected him for a random check. However, according to surveillance footage reviewed by the police, the arch did indeed light up red as the man passed through.

The police had to involve their embassy security coordinator to try to resolve the situation and clarify the applicable legal framework. Eventually, the diplomat chose to "submit to a security check," as stated in the police report of the incident.

According to Siren, diplomats are generally required to undergo security checks, but airlines can allow them to board with an escort without having gone through the check.

The diplomat's country of origin is not disclosed in the documents.
