Dead seals have been discovered along the beaches of Simrishamn, causing strong reactions. After concerned beachgoers contacted the municipality over the weekend, efforts to remove the seals have commenced, reports Ystads Allehanda.
At seven o'clock on Monday morning, the removal of the dead seals from Simrishamn's beaches began.
Linda Larsson, head of public environments at Simrishamn municipality, told Ystads Allehanda that there haven't been this many dead seals on the beaches at once since she became head.
– They are usually scattered throughout the year. There haven't been this many at once, she told the newspaper.
Upset Beachgoers: “Disturbing”
On social media, beachgoers have expressed their distress over the unusual finds. According to Simrishamn municipality, several people have called about the seals.
“A dead seal that especially the children found disturbing,” writes a Facebook user.
Although calls came in as early as Saturday, it wasn't until Monday that the municipality began removing the seals.
Linda Larsson told Ystads Allehanda that this delay was due to difficulties in doing so when the beaches are crowded.
The seals will now be sent for examination to determine the cause of death.
– But it is clear that one of the seals is entangled in fishing nets and died because of it, not due to illness. We won't send that one away, says Linda Larsson to Ystads Allehanda.
