Jessica Stegrud's relationship with Nick Alinia could jeopardize her future in the Swedish Democrats, according to right-wing commentator Chang Frick.
In recent weeks, Swedish Democrats' MP Jessica Stegrud has been at the center of a storm. During a debate on cultural canon, she made a controversial statement, noting it was "telling" that two politicians of non-Swedish ethnic origin were debating the issue.
Last week, it was revealed that Stegrud participated in filming when right-wing extremist activist Nick Alinia followed and confronted two young men. Stegrud and Alinia are a couple, as confirmed by several sources to Expressen.
Stegrud's actions have angered many other politicians, including colleagues in the Tidö parties. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) described the tone in Swedish politics as "appalling" following the revelation of the filmed confrontation.
– Many need to get their act together. This is an example of that.
Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch (KD) went further, calling the actions "terrible" and "incompatible with Swedish values."
"Activism Can Be Rewarding"
The Swedish Democrats have discussed the filmed confrontation with Stegrud but decided she will retain her duties.
According to right-wing commentator Chang Frick, with a background in the Swedish Democrats, SD voters appreciate Stegrud's style.
– Many voters might want to see politicians who take less nonsense. But it's a balancing act and an internal issue within SD. As a politician, being activist can be rewarding, but being too activist will backfire, he says.
He points out that within SD, there is a different political culture than in other parties, where being assertive is seen positively. This can lead to different interpretations of situations than other parties might have.
However, Stegrud's relationship with Alinia could affect her reputation as a politician, Frick believes.
– The problem is that this type of behavior can be associated with Nick in certain contexts. Sooner or later, it could risk affecting Jessica, and that's really unfortunate. She is not confrontational at all in normal circumstances.
