The inclusion of the Viggen fighter jet in Sweden's cultural canon has sparked criticism from the peace organization Svenska Freds, which argues that it reflects a trend towards militarization. Saab, the manufacturer, expresses pride in the recognition, highlighting the jet as a symbol of Swedish innovation.

Controversy Erupts Over Viggen's Inclusion in Sweden's Cultural Canon
Viggen is included in Sweden's cultural canon. Svenska Freds is not pleased. – This is what authoritarian states do, says chairperson Kerstin Bergeå.
On Tuesday, 100 works or events considered to have defined Sweden's history were presented in the debated cultural canon. The list includes works by Strindberg and Selma Lagerlöf, but also more unexpected entries like the Viggen fighter jet, built by Saab.
The organization Svenska Freds criticizes the inclusion of a fighter jet on the list.
– This is part of a trend where we see how Saab is moving into culture. This is something authoritarian states would do, incorporating a military historical project like Viggen. It's part of a larger militarization trend in our society, says Kerstin Bergeå, chairperson of the organization.
She also mentions that Saab is a sponsor of the Technical Museum as an example of what they see as militarization.
Not the Whole Picture
According to Svenska Freds, the full story isn't told by just including Viggen.
– It doesn't tell about the 600 pilots who died in the 1950s and 60s during the development of new fighter jets, says Kerstin Bergeå.
The organization views the nomination as legitimizing the military.
– It's part of selling the idea that we need violence and weapons to build security. We don't believe in that. Saab is also a private company with profit interests, whose shares rise when there is war, says Kerstin Bergeå.
Saab: “Proud”
Saab says they are proud of the nomination.
“We, who manufactured the Viggen fighter jet, are naturally very happy and proud that the jet has been selected as one of the inventions included in Sweden's Cultural Canon. Viggen was a fantastic fighter jet and an excellent example of Swedish innovation, engineering, and the unique expertise in defense and fighter jets that characterize Saab. Viggen is also a good example of Saab's mission, which has always been about contributing to a safer society. We are proud to carry this legacy forward as we now develop today's and tomorrow's fighter jets, Gripen,” says Mattias Rådström, Saab's press chief, in a statement.
