Bus and Car Engulfed in Flames After Collision on Farsta Bridge

A severe accident has occurred on the Farsta Bridge in Värmdö, Stockholm.

At the Insjön interchange on road 222, heading towards Värmdö, a bus and a car collided. The alarm was raised at 09:23, and according to the police, two individuals are involved, one in each vehicle, reports SvD.

Traffic is halted in both directions, causing long queues, according to the Swedish Transport Administration. The road is closed between the Gustavsberg and Insjön interchanges, and police urge travelers to find alternative routes.

– The road will be closed for quite some time, says Marie Nordahl, alarm and operations operator at the Greater Stockholm Fire Department.

The fire department is on-site with several units, and as of 11:30, efforts were still ongoing.

– When we arrived, both vehicles were fully engulfed in flames. The fire has now subsided enough for us to approach them, says Marie Nordahl.

The police are also present. Spokesperson Anders Bryngelsson states that the bus was not in regular service and, according to initial information, had no passengers on board.

– Initially, it seems that only the drivers of each vehicle are involved, with no additional individuals, he says.

“Flames Were Shooting Out”

Witness Ann was four cars away from the accident site when the collision occurred.

– A massive fire erupted. Flames were just shooting out, she says.

– People jumped out of their cars and ran to help, she continues.

Värmdö resident Annica Korsner was one of the first on the scene. She noticed traffic slowing at the start of the bridge and then saw the smoke cloud.

– This isn't the first time a severe accident has happened on this bridge, it's terrible. Horrible. This bridge needs to change. My children take the bus here, she says.

Multiple Ambulances

She reports that several ambulances and fire trucks are on-site, with two ambulance helicopters in the air.

– People started turning back towards Värmdö, I had to turn around and go back home, says Annica.

Jacob Rezai was also at the scene after the accident occurred.

– I'm about a hundred meters from the accident. We've been standing here for about half an hour, and thick smoke is still coming out. There are at least five or six ambulances here, and two helicopters have landed at the site, he says.

Nobina, which operates SL buses in Värmdö, is working to assist the police and fire department.

– We have had what is assessed as a head-on collision between an SL bus and a car. We have activated a crisis plan and have staff on-site, says David Erixon, press officer at Nobina.

The region announces that they have entered a state of emergency due to the extensive medical resources on-site and the unclear injury situation.
