Borgholm's Systembolaget Reopens After Sewage Explosion

At 3 PM on Friday afternoon, Systembolaget in Borgholm was able to reopen following a sewage explosion, reports Ölandsbladet. This was made possible after extensive work by both a cleaning company and the regular staff.

The explosion in the store's warehouse was discovered on Thursday evening. On Friday, a notice on the door informed customers that the store would be closed until further notice.

The news shocked both locals and vacationing summer visitors who planned to purchase drinks for the weekend.

– I have a party tonight, what am I supposed to do now?, a visitor told Ölandsbladet earlier in the day.

Hard Work to Reopen

Systembolaget's customers were directed to the nearest stores in Löttorp and Färjestaden, but by 3 PM, the Borgholm store announced the good news that it was open again.

– There wasn't a huge rush, but maybe 50 to 60 customers have come, said store manager Mikael Persson at 5 PM on Friday afternoon.

It required hard work from both Systembolaget's regular staff and a cleaning company to reopen the store. Approximately seven to nine pallets of goods had to be discarded due to contamination.

– It's mainly beer and other items that are drunk directly from the can that have been contaminated, so it will be noticeable that maybe 30 to 40 items are missing, says Mikael Persson.

Stock Restored Next Week

According to the store manager, the shelves will look normal again by the middle of next week, once deliveries have been received to replace the discarded items.

But the store is already open according to regular hours – so those who had to return home without their intended purchases this morning can resolve the issue.
