In Sweden, the Bergslagen region leads in noise violation fines due to loud music from vehicles, accounting for 50% of the country's fines this summer. Despite efforts to curb the issue, the region remains a hotspot for such disturbances, prompting calls for stricter penalties and designated areas for music enthusiasts.

Epa-dunk and rockabilly at disturbingly high volumes – so far this summer, the police have issued over 550 fines across the country. One region is undoubtedly the nation's worst offender, consistently topping the list of fines.
Since 2021, the police have been able to issue fines for disturbing behavior to individuals playing loud music that disrupts the surroundings.
– It is certainly a culture to drive around in cars and play loud music, and that should be allowed, but not so that others cannot sleep, says Maria Westby, a police officer in the Bergslagen region.
Bergslagen, which includes Örebro, Värmland, and Dalarna counties, has the highest number of fines issued for disturbing music from June 1st to the first week of August. The region has topped the list all four years the law has been in effect, and this summer accounts for 50% of the fines issued in Sweden.
– We have various car events, such as cruisings, which attract many people who play very loud music, says Maria Westby.
The region has struggled to get people to stop playing too loudly and hopes the law can be further developed.
– The fine is currently 1,000 kronor, a low amount, and many of those playing music share the cost. It would be desirable to raise the fine limit, says Maria Westby.
Another option would be to introduce gathering places where people can meet and let music blast from the speakers of A-tractors and classic cars.
Even though the Bergslagen region consistently ranks first for issued fines, Maria Westby believes it is largely because the region has found a routine that results in more fines being issued.
– If people come here, they notice they get fined.
