Barbie Introduces New Doll with Type 1 Diabetes
Barbie is launching a new doll with Type 1 diabetes, featuring an insulin pump and glucose monitor, as reported by CNN.
The new Barbie doll, equipped with an insulin pump, glucose monitor, and snacks in her bag, is designed to represent children with Type 1 diabetes. The doll was unveiled at a diabetes event in Washington and developed in collaboration with the nonprofit diabetes organization Breakthrough T1D.
Mattel, the toy company behind Barbie, has partnered with the organization to ensure the doll represents as many people with Type 1 diabetes as possible.
A Personal Collaboration
In a press release, Mattel stated that the new doll aims to help more children see themselves in Barbie dolls, thereby increasing inclusion.
"Barbie helps shape children's early perceptions of the world," said Krista Berger, Vice President of Barbie, in the press release.
Aaron J. Kowalski, CEO of the nonprofit diabetes organization, described the collaboration as personal, having lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was 13, and his brother since he was three.
"It is an honor to work with a brand that shares our commitment to showing children that a life with Type 1 diabetes can be full, colorful, and empowering," he said in the press release.
Barbie's Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
Barbie has previously expanded its range to promote inclusion, launching dolls with various skin tones, body types, and abilities.
Among these, they have introduced a doll who is blind and another with Down syndrome. These were some of the most popular dolls globally in 2024, according to CNN.
