Abdou Njie Arrested in Spain for Suspected Gang Murder

A man suspected of the murder of the 'Östberga Captain' in 2022 has been arrested in Spain and is now detained in Sweden.

The 27-year-old man, who was shot dead in August 2022, was described as a 'captain' in the criminal Östberga network and was accused of drug trafficking, extortion, and mafia-like activities.

After the fatal shooting of the 'captain' on a street in Haninge, south of Stockholm, the then 21-year-old Abdou Njie was suspected after being caught on film leaving the murder scene by commuter train. He has been identified as a runner in the Märsta network, which had allied with the Östberga network's enemies before the murder.

Became Internationally Wanted

When the police task force broke into Abdou Njie's home days after the murder, he was not there. After being detained in absentia in February 2023 and internationally wanted, he has now been physically detained.

– He was arrested on April 24 this year in Spain on the southern coast. He was then transferred here, and new detention hearings have been held. He is now detained here on probable cause suspected of this murder, says prosecutor Patrik Viklund.

"Of Course It's Frustrating"

Abdou Njie, 24, was transferred to Sweden from Spain in June and has been detained since. Another man, suspected on probable grounds of aiding in the murder, was also arrested during the summer.

Charges are expected to be filed in the fall, according to the prosecutor.

– The work has continued even though this person has not been in custody, the police are working. Much work has already been done, but much remains. My assessment is that the investigation can be completed in the fall, says Patrik Viklund.

The arrest of the suspected murderer allows the investigation to progress.

– In a murder case, and really in all investigations, it is obviously satisfying to bring people home and then move forward and complete the investigation, regardless of the outcome. It is, of course, frustrating when those suspected of involvement are not in the country and available, so we can drive the investigation forward, says Patrik Viklund.
