80-Year-Old Margareta Embarks on Au Pair Adventure in the USA

Margareta from Motala traveled to the USA to become an au pair—a journey many undertake after graduation. However, one detail stands out.

"I went when I was 'eighty' instead of 'eighteen'," says Margareta.

Most au pairs are in their 20s, but that didn't stop 80-year-old Margareta Isacsson. In February, she swapped her home in Motala for Monterey, California.

There, she spent two months as an au pair for Clara, a seven-month-old, as first reported by Motala Vadstena Tidning.

Margareta herself didn't find it remarkable.

"It was natural for me. If they think I should go and I can be of help, why shouldn't I do it?" she says.

With two children, a grandchild, and many step-grandchildren, taking care of little ones was no problem.

"You take care of them the same way now as you did before."

The baby is the grandchild of Margareta's daughter-in-law, so it felt natural to go when the family needed childcare help. Fortunately, Clara was calm and easy to handle.

During the days, they went for walks, hung out in the park, and ate together while the parents worked. They also met other children with their mothers or grandmothers.

"It was very interesting and fun to chat a bit with other parents too. And they were a bit curious about me and thought it was impressive that I had traveled so far to look after a child," Margareta shares.

Unusual Encounter – Motala in Monterey

Despite being on the other side of the Atlantic, Sweden never felt far away. A group of Swedish women who had lived in the area for a long time invited Margareta for semlor on Shrove Tuesday.

"When I talked to them, we also had mutual acquaintances. So the world isn't that big."

On weekends, Margareta and the family often went on excursions. One day, they attended a football match, and something unexpected happened.

"We actually met a Swedish guy from Motala, who had moved to Monterey in January and was a professional footballer."

The young man, in his 20s, was invited to Margareta and the family's home.

"It was strange. Two people from Motala, which isn't that big, travel to Monterey in the USA."

Margareta's Advice: Seize the Moment

Margareta encourages others to take the chance for adventure when it arises, regardless of when in life.

"I live in the moment and do what comes to mind, and I don't care if I'm a pensioner or what I am."

Soon, she and her sister, who is 87, will head to Sälen for a hiking trip.

"It's just about seizing the opportunity as long as you can."
