Avoid These Swimming Spots in Stockholm This Summer

As summer temperatures rise, finding a safe place to cool off becomes increasingly important. However, some swimming spots in Stockholm should be approached with caution. Several of Stockholm's beaches have failed municipal tests, potentially containing harmful bacteria or algae blooms.

All EU beaches must be regularly inspected and tested by the municipality. This summer, several beaches in Stockholm are advised against swimming by the municipality.

At Hökarängsbadet, Sköndalsbadet, and Skrubba strandbad in Drevviken, the municipality advises against swimming due to suspected algae blooms. Algae blooms have been present at Skrubba strandbad since mid-June.

Johannelundsbadet in Minneberg has been under advisory against swimming for the entire bathing season since March 26 due to poor water quality as classified by municipal measurements.

Similarly, Johannedalsbadet in Vårberg is under advisory against swimming throughout the bathing season due to poor water quality.

Fecal Bacteria at Stockholm Beach

At Östra Ängbybadet, very high levels of intestinal enterococci were measured in August last year, and Stockholm's municipality has advised against swimming at the site for a year. Intestinal enterococci are bacteria found in the feces of both humans and animals. High levels of this bacteria in the water indicate pollution, according to the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management.

The pollution may have been caused by sewage, runoff after rain, or bird droppings. The presence of intestinal enterococci increases the risk of other bacteria, parasites, or viruses that can make you sick in the water.

But don't despair – most of Stockholm's beaches meet the requirements for water quality, allowing you to swim as much as you like.
